BEIJING, May 23 (Xinhua) — Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.52 percent to 3,246.24 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.03 percent lower at 11,012.58 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 763.4 billion yuan (about 108.6 billion U.S. dollars), down from 792.6 billion yuan on the previous trading day.
Pharmaceutical stocks led the gains, while those related to the insurance sector suffered the biggest losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China’s Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.18 percent to close at 2,253.33 points on Tuesday.
