Our Story
The story of Hellyers Road is as unlikely as it is rewarding.
It is one of foresight, determination and dedication, inspired by Henry Hellyer’s spirit of adventure. With that guiding spirit, we create whisky that captures the very essence of endeavour, our unique landscape and character.
The true taste of Tasmania.
Hellyers Road Distillery is known for continually producing some of Australia’s best single malt whiskies and being a leader in peated whisky expressions. Revered around the world, but always remaining true to our sense of place.
It all began near a town called Burnie – a breath-taking landscape on Tasmania’s northwest coast – a corner of the world more accustomed to building things, growing things and milking things. Winding up and above from this town is a road. This road was once a trail.
The trail was once bush – bush that in 1827 was carved out by Henry Hellyer, an explorer and cartographer, who was tasked to chart this rugged and naturally beautiful landscape. A wild landscape that bore an abundance of challenges and set in motion a journey into the unknown.
Today, the road (named in Henry’s honour) leads us home to our distillery and embodies the spirit of our history.

Go behind the scenes and tour our working distillery to see how we make some of the finest single malt whiskies and what makes Hellyers Road truly unique.
Be immersed by our ingredients and be drawn to our latest batch distilling. Visit one of our bond stores – filled with our carefully selected oak barrels and understand everything there is to know about Hellyers Road, our history, whiskies and Henry Hellyer himself – the man behind our name.
During the tour, you will have the opportunity to sample our 2016 Port Cask Matured Single Malt Whisky, and have the option to pour, bottle and hand wax seal your very own bottle of 20-year-old Australian single malt whisky direct from the cask! This is the premier cask bottling experience in the country, and one of the rarest individual bottling opportunities in the world. The experiences comes complete with a signed Certificate and inclusion in to the famed Hellyers Road Barrel Register.
A fully guided tour runs for 30 to 40 minutes and is just $25 per person, and includes a pour of our 2016 Port Cask Matured Single Malt Whisky. For an additional $10 you may upgrade your tasting to our 20-year-old Single Malt instead, straight from the cask.
Following the tour, you are invited to indulge in one of our tasting flights. This includes our range of single malts and whisky cream liqueurs at your leisure. One of our knowledgeable cellar door team will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. We currently offer 5 different tasting flight options which include 3 x 15ml samples (approx. 1.5 – 4.0 Std drinks). Additional tasting fees apply.
