WEHI is where the world’s brightest minds collaborate and innovate to

make discoveries that will help us to live healthier for longer.

Established in 1915, WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research) is Australia’s oldest and leading independent medical research institute. Our medical researchers have been serving the community for more than 100 years.

Leveraging cutting-edge technologies and highly collaborative networks, WEHI brings together multidisciplinary teams comprised of world-leading experts from a range of diverse scientific disciplines to solve the greatest health challenges facing our community today.

At WEHI we attract, empower and develop the brightest minds from the most diverse talent pool. We have a track record of excellence. We support emerging talent, big ideas and disruptive thinking. We are agile and entrepreneurial, well governed and fiscally responsible.

Our research

Our teams of researchers are committed to solving the most complex health problems, making transformative discoveries for cancer, infectious and immune diseases, developmental disorders and healthy ageing.

Cancer – understanding the basic processes that are disrupted to generate cancer cells, and how these can be targeted to treat disease.

Immune health and infection – discovering how the body fights infection, and how errors in the immune system lead to disease.

Development and healthy ageing – studying how the biological foundations laid down during gestation and childhood affect development, and how our longer life expectancy presents new challenges for our ageing population.

New medicines and advanced technologies – a powerful hub for cutting-edge technologies underpinning biomedical discoveries and for the translation of these discoveries into new medicines and diagnostics.

Computational biology – developing and applying new tools to analyse the genomes of disease-causing parasites, as well as better understanding the immune system and genetic drivers of cancer.

International Student Program in Research Experience (InSPIRE)

The InSPIRE program seeks to:

• strengthen Australian medical research ties throughout Asia

• promote and strengthen interaction and long-term collaboration with the brightest minds at top universities across Asia

• engage with the next generation of passionate young scientists

• promote Australian institutions and Australia as a location for cutting-edge biomedical research.

WEHI’s InSPIRE program is committed to establishing strong educational and research collaborations with leading institutions in Asia.

Launched in 2016, InSPIRE has facilitated collaborative relationships with some of the world’s top universities such as Tsinghua, Fudan, Nanjing, Zhejiang, Nankai and Jinan universities in China, as well as Ehime and Osaka universities in Japan, Indian Institute of Science, Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore.

The InSPIRE experience

To date, InSPIRE has provided an exceptional opportunity for 126 talented young students across Asia to immerse themselves in Australian culture and gain valuable world-class biomedical research experience.

The 10-week InSPIRE internship gives students the chance to work alongside some of Australia’s leading scientists at WEHI and our partner institutions including the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the University of Melbourne and Bio21 Institute.

Not only have InSPIRE students contributed to Australia’s medical research, but they have also been excellent ambassadors for their home universities and countries, as well as for the Australian medical research sector.

InSPIRE scholarships

Each participating student receives a scholarship of $8,000 which provides support for the student’s living expenses including meals and accommodation and their economy return airfares. InSPIRE students live with host families while in Melbourne, providing a wonderful experience of life and biomedical research in Australia.

The InSPIRE program is made possible by support from philanthropic supporters, WEHI, co-host institutes, InSPIRE partner universities and the Australian Government.
