IN ASIA The Shanghai Composite Index opened at 2,885.22 points, down 6.63 points, or 0.23 percent. The Shenzhen Component Index opened at 8,482.17 points, down 32.48 points, or 0.38 percent. The Hang Seng Index opened at 17,194.37 points, down 43.97 points, or 0.26 percent. The S&P/ASX 200 index opened at 7,911.40 points, down 78.20 points, or 0.98 percent. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average opened at 38,241.35 points, down 227.28 points, or 0.59 percent. The Straits Times Index opened at 3,442.62 points, down 1.56 points, or 0.05 percent. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index opened at 2,744.40 points, down 21.13 points, or 0.76 percent.
IN THE UNITED STATES The S&P 500 Index closed at 5,463.54 points, up 4.44 points, or 0.08 percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 40,539.93 points, down 49.41 points, or 0.12 percent. The Nasdaq Composite Index closed at 17,370.20 points, up 12.32 points, or 0.07 percent.
